Drunken Pears poached in red wine

Our pear tree this year has yielded a crazy amount of fruit and after numerous crumbles and cakes I turned my hand to something more purest…poached pears in red wine.

With the cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg this dish has a distinctly mulled wine, Christmassy feel which is probably what endears it to me.

It is very clean on the palette and a great note to end a meal on.

ingredients pears, red wine, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg (quantities to taste)

preparation
1. Peel, core and half the pears and put in a saucepan.
2. Cover with red one and add in sugar and spice to taste. I have deliberately not put quantities as you really need to play and taste until it suits.
3. Heat gently without bringing to the boil for c 30 mins until the pears are soft but still intact.
4. Remove the pears and reduce the remaining liquid until it thickens to a syrup and then pour over the pears.
5. Serve warm.
